What is Vision Therapy?

Vision Therapy is a doctor supervised program designed to improve the function of the visual system.

Your Behavioural Optometrist may suggest vision therapy for

  • A lazy or amblyopic eye
  • An eye that is crossed or turned (strabismus)
  • Focusing problems
  • Poor hand eye coordination
  • Visual thinking problems
  • Concussion or stroke
  • In many cases, athletes can benefit from vision therapy to improve their game.

Symptoms of a Vision Problem

  • Headaches
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Losing your place while reading or re-reading lines
  • Misjudging a serve, catch of the ball or over/under throwing
  • Trouble hitting the net or aiming the shot
  • Excessive fatigue from school or work
  • Suppression or closing one eye to avoid strain or double vision

Vision is more than successfully reading a 20/20 line on the eye chart. Vision occurs in the brain where the input from the eyes combines with other sensory inputs from sounds, smells, touch, balance and posture.

What’s involved?

Vision therapy uses prisms, lenses, colour, partial occlusion, computers, virtual reality games and movement.

A typical program involves a weekly 45 minute session with a qualified vision therapist.

There is usually a homework item that is practiced at home for about 15 minutes.

The vision therapy program is tailor made for each individual and their specific needs. The frequency or sessions, the amount of home training and the duration of the program depends on the severity of the problem and the specific needs of the patient.

The Bolton Vision Therapy Centre offers vision therapy to effectively treat amblyopia (lazy eye) in children.

Is Vision Therapy covered by insurance?

OHIP does not cover Vision Therapy. In many cases insurance companies with vision plans, do not include Vision Therapy. There are exceptions and Bolton Optometry will be happy to provide you with a letter for your insurance company so you can inquire about your coverage.
