MiyoSmart for Myopia Management

Myopia (nearsightedness) affects 1.45 billion people around the world, and the situation is growing even bleaker: An estimated 5 billion people could be nearsighted by 2050.

The good news: There are ways to slow and sometimes halt myopia’s progression. MiyoSmart optical lenses, developed by Hoya, are one such option.

Why Do Children Develop Myopia?

Myopia (nearsightedness) occurs when the shape of the eyeball grows too long, causing light rays to refract incorrectly. This leads to blurred vision when looking at distant objects.

Children who have a myopic parent are at a higher risk of developing myopia. So are children of Asian descent. While more research is needed, it appears that children who spend many hours engaged in “near work” — homework, reading, looking at computers and other digital devices — are also at higher risk of developing myopia.

This is worrying because children with moderate to severe myopia have a higher chance of developing sight-threatening eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment later in life.

While standard eyeglasses and contact lenses can provide clear distance vision, they don’t cure myopia. They only relieve the symptoms.

That’s why many parents choose myopia management for their children.

What is MiyoSmart?

MiyoSmart is a new type of optical lens that has been shown to control the progression of myopia. In a two-year clinical trial, children who wore glasses with MiyoSmart lenses had a 60% lower progression of myopia.

MiyoSmart uses the latest lens manufacturing technology developed in cooperation with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The lens consists of a central optical zone for correcting refractive error and then multiple lower-powered rings that extend from the central zone to the edge of the lenses. This design provides both clear vision and myopic defocus simultaneously, which controls myopia progression

The lens fits all eyeglass frames, is impact resistant, and provides UV protection to keep your child’s eyes safe during sports and in sunlight.

How to Protect Your Child’s Eyes

Diagnosing myopia early can help slow its progression and prevent serious eye diseases in adulthood. As a parent, here is what you can do to help prevent your child’s myopia from worsening:

  • Encourage your child to spend at least 2 hours a day outdoors. Studies have shown that children who spend considerable time playing in the sun have slower myopia progression. Be sure to follow your local health guidelines regarding children and sunshine.
  • Remind your child to take frequent breaks when using a digital device or doing near-work for long periods of time, at least 5-10 minutes every hour
  • Schedule regular eye exams to ensure that your child’s myopia or other vision problems are detected and treated early.
